Part of the group

October 5, 1999

Something that I feared was going to happen once we moved is starting to happen.  One of the things that I was really concerned about was gossip and cliques. Many of us are already friends and as more and more people move into their newly completed homes I have noticed that those of us who are already friends are defining and choosing who we are going to become involved with. The Beaters are not even a part of "the group" mainly because of their strict religious beliefs, their strong belief in corporal punishment, and their lack of education. They just don't fit in and as more and more people move into the area it is more apparent. My gun toting neighbor Hose and his wife Francis are also not a part of "the group" for obvious reasons : pulling out an automatic weapon on utility personnel and neighbors, domestic violence, and education. Mrs. Cool and I are pretty much the ring leaders of the group. I have never thought of myself as a ringleader in a clique because I have never really been in one but here I am, consciously making a decision to not associate or include others.

To be honest, I am feeling pretty powerful.

Everyone wants to be friends with me and wants to come hang out at my house. People are calling me, asking me for advice or help with this or that or just wanting to come over and talk. It was never like this in highschool, I was always on the outside looking in and in college I didn't care to belong to any cliques, clubs, or sororities. Most people think I am odd, straying from the norm and not really wanting to get too involved with me personally. This is the first time people have flocked to me and saw my weirdness as fascinating.

I am really enjoying the atmosphere of the neighborhood and the new people that are starting to move in. Mr. and Mrs. South moved in a few weeks ago, she is a stay at home mom and he is a dentist. They are really nice and recently moved here, the only thing is they have this small dog they let run loose and he shits in everyone's yard and digs up the flower beds. I'm afraid the South's little dog is going to disappear. This past weekend we had three different families move in. I have only had the opportunity to meet one of the couples, Mr. and Mrs. Funny are a young couple with no children. She is in medical school and he is an engineer and they seem like a lot of fun. Mrs. Funny is concerned about all the pregnant women and babies on the street, she is afraid its in the water. The Cools really like the Funny's too, mainly because they know how to have a fun time. I see block parties in our future.

I've decided to  start using a notebook to write some of my thoughts and feelings in during the day. Using the micro-casette recorder isn;t working out and I am hoping that this may help me tap into my creative energy and lead me to a better expression of myself, thus improving my writing.

Right now I am feeling confident about the direction I want to take with my talents and thus the need for improvement. I've been thinking about starting a list where a small group can help worked together in developing our writing skills and possibly even using ideas from the Artists Way or Writing With the Right Side of the Brain. For the first time I really feel like I have the devotion and will power to pursue my dream of being an author.
