11.18.99

It was a great mail day.

Have you ever had one of those days when you went out to your mail box and you just dreaded what might be in there? I sure have. Today, however, my mail box was filled with magazines, catalogs, and I received two boxes from a book club I recently joined. There were no bills, no junk mail, and nothing begging me for money. So here is what I got today:

Pottery Barn Christmas 1999 catalog : I absolutely love the Pottery Barn and wished that we had one nearby. Today I sat cuddled up in my big oversized chair with a blank pen putting little stars by the things I wanted. I picked out some great stocking hangers that spell out the word WISH and some velvet stockings. I also listed some items from a previous wishlist, a mirror for the master bath and two crown molding shelves, and two wool rugs, one for the family room and one for the kitchen.

Country Home Magazine : I just thumbed through this, but I saw some really great ideas for decorating for Christmas and some desserts I might try to make.

Home Magazine :This is not one of my favorite magazines during the holiday months but I do like to read the decorating articles and I enjoy looking at the advertisements. I used this magazine and Traditional Home to help me pick out things for this house when we were building it. I would tare the pages out of what I liked and keep them in a big folder. This made it easy when we went to look at sinks, fixtures, counter tops, etc. since I already had an idea of what I wanted.

When I opened up my two boxes from the recent book club I just joined I wished I could have opened it with Amy standing in my living room. I love to indulge myself with books and these are the ones I got today.

Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House by Cheryl Mendelson : This was the very first book I uncovered from the box. I was a little surprised at how thick it was and I opened it up and read the inside cover. The book is all about house keeping, and when I looked at all the chapters and all the topics it discussed I felt like I had come across a true treasure. I know this book is going to be something I refer back to for a long time to come.

Mother of Pearl by Melinda Haynes : I really have wanted to read this book since I first noticed a window display in Fairhope, Alabama, advertising that a local author had written it. I was surprised to learn that I in fact have met the author on several occasions, she is the daughter of the pastor I was under in highschool. Actually the author lives ten minutes from my house (she was living in trailer, but I'm sure that will be changing). After seeing Melinda Haynes on Oprah I decided that I would definitely get the book. I'm not big on fiction but it sounded like something I could relate too.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling : I was hearing all the hype about Harry Potter and wasn't really interested in knowing about the books and the author UNTIL I came across several articles that some Christian groups were against the books and thought they needed to be censored in our schools. A little bit of controversy sparked my interest, especially when the Southern Baptists were one of the ones against it, so now I have the first book in the series to see what all the fuss is about.

Meriam-Websters Manual for Writers and Editors : I'm not really sure why I got this book. I've been looking in to doing some free-lance work and I eventually want to write that novel, so I thought I might need a little guidance. I looked through it and it looks like an English book, but I'll take a look at it anyway.

good things by Martha Stewart : While I was looking at this book I started to feel a little disappointed. There were some really great ideas in it and recipes I'm sure I'll try but overall I don't think it was worth me getting. Mostly everything I looked at has been on her show or in her magazine.

The Winter Solstice: The Sacred Traditions of Christmas by John Matthews : This book was a must have the first time I saw it at the local B&N. The cover alone is intriguing with the face of the green man on front. I thought this was a worthwhile book to get considering Jeff and I have chosen not to bring up Elizabeth in a Christian home. I wanted to look at older traditions and those from different cultures surrounding this festive holiday time. Jeff thought it was a good idea and so now for the next few weeks we will be seeing what traditions we can start for our family.
